Application Notes / Cellular Network
Fixed service point-to point (PP-FS) radio is becoming extremely important in the architecture of Radio-Access-Networks for GSM and UMTS cellular networks. The interconnection between BTS and BSC for GSM operators and Node B and RNC for UMTS operators is one of the main fields for its application.

Expected transport capacity for interconnection between different network layers for GSM and UMTS network:

Layer Capacity Implementation Hop length urban Hop length rural
BTC - BTC 2, 4x2 Mbit/s SparkWave 18/23, SparkLine 0.5-1.4 km 5-16 km
BTC - BSC 4x2, 34 Mbit/s SparkWave 18/23, SparkLine 0.5-1.4 km 5-16 km
Node B - Node B 2, 4x2 Mbit/s SparkWave 18/23, SparkLine 0.5-1.4 km 5-16 km
Node B - TCP 4x2, 34 Mbit/s, STM-1 SparkWave 18/23, SparkLine, SparkLight 0.5-2.5 km 5-20 km
TCP - node A Nx34 Mbit/s, STM-1 SparkWave 18/23, SparkLine, SparkLight 2-5 km 5-20 km
Node A - RNC NxsSTM-1, STM-16 SparkLight 5-10 km 5-20 km
RNC - MSC NxSTM-1, STM-16 SparkLight 0-20 km 0-20 km

Depending on the requirements concerning:
  • hop length
  • required capacity
  • availability target
suitable frequency bands for wireless link operation may be found (18 GHz, 23 GHz or 38 GHz). The most common use and reliable is a star topology. However, direct access with star topology is not suitable for long haul transmission and no LOS path; it would require link installation with large antennas. Thus, chains of PP-FS links, instead of direct interconnection, need to be considered. Lower availability and aggregation of capacity along chains are disadvantages of chains.
